BE(H)IN(D) THE MASK
is the second site-specific of the trilogy “Impermanent” materialised in “Espaço Emprestado”.
KSAM EHT (D)NI(H)EB approaches the ideas of identity and personality associating them with the concepts of transformation.
It attempts to open a query about the individual possibility of knowledge of the constitutive elements of the Self,
and about the consequent possibility (willingness and ability) to extend and share this knowledge within the functions and relationships of social-life.
Excerpts from the novel “One, No One and One Hundred Thousand” (1925) by the Sicilian playwright, poet and novelist Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936)
and from “Ways of Seeing” (1972) by the English art-critic, painter, poet and novelist John Berger (1926-2017) were included in this work.
This appropriation helped to question the multiplex valences of the term “Persona” (Person) whose original meaning “theatrical mask/character” changed in a second moment to “individual” of unspecified sex.
How the individual relates with the “mask”?
How does the “mask” participate in the process of the individual constitution of a person?
Does the mask offer a possibility
-
to forge and produce the self in daily-life-context
-
to elude anonymity
-
to escape pre-constituted and limiting social models
-
to dissemble and falsify the self
-
to hide and filter the contact with the outside world?

THE SPACE

THE VIDEO Projection on fragmented paper screen
Fragments of fragments. Our perception of reality. The reality.
Which and how many?
The experience. The intuition of our essence.
The faces of our own person, one and multiplex. The sensation of the sounds.
Understanding the words,
the whistling of the wind.
I deny the security of having understood. Adversary propositions.
Memories and false reconstructions of hopes.
Life projections.
The center.
Attempts to achieve it from afar;
the horizons of gray abandoned suburbs. Fragments. Our strengths and vulnerabilities. Passions. The needs to be ... is it?
Does the search allow itself to persist giving life to the ironic circus of surviving?
Fragments.
Fragments of me and everyone.
An “us” that echoes us in the simplicity of multiplication, reproduction and unfolding.
I am dazzled.
Hidden amoebas. Faces in the sunlight.
Collecting fragments I briefly recognize something familiar;
The never resettled.
That's how the sea runs.
Fragmentos de fragmentos.
A percepção nossa da realidade.
A realidade. Qual e quantas?
A experiência.
O centro.
Deslumbro-me.
Amebas escondidas. Caras à luz do sol.
Recolhendo os fragmentos sumidamente reconheço algo de familiar; o nunca assente.
È assim que corre o mar.

Starting from a photographic work whose subjects are people portrayed from behind the video presents this symbolic procession of individuals-persona involved into a noisy identity research.
